Our mission & vision

[words]‘ mission is to serve Maplewood and surrounding communities by offering an engaging and welcoming atmosphere for people and families of all stripes to pursue their literary interests. In particular, we are dedicated to the families in our community that have a member with a developmental disability. We strive to help Maplewood become a model community of inclusion through our treatment of disabled customers and employees, especially those with autism.

As Maplewood’s Bookstore, we work tirelessly to ensure our community’s love of books and reading is passed down to future generations. To this end, we offer an extensive selection of books in-store and thousands of ebooks through our partnership with Kobo eBooks™ – the official eBook reader of independent booksellers (learn more).



The [words] story

[words] purchased Goldfinch on November 1, 2008. Shortly thereafter, we moved from the old location of 97A Baker Street to a much larger space at 179 Maplewood Avenue, opening there on January 20, 2009. Each of the eleven Goldfinch employees agreed to stay on and work for [words], and their hard work and dedication served to enable a smooth transition. We ordered approximately 5,000 new books to expand significantly the selections that we can offer in-store to our customers. As we continue to serve the greater Maplewood area, we strive to offer a uniquely comfortable and personal atmosphere that only a community-oriented independent bookstore can provide. We are proud of our history and look forward to a future of involvement in, and enrichment of, the Maplewood community.

The [words] branding — name, logo and merchandizing — was generously created pro bono by our friends at SoHo based design firm Barker DZP.
